Grand Theft Auto 6 hasn't launched yet, and it's already made nearly half a billion dollars. Analytics firm Sensor Tower reports that GTA VI has grossed $429 million through pre-orders alone - 4.38 million copies sold worldwide - with the game still roughly three months from release.
The platform split leans heavily toward PlayStation: Sensor Tower's numbers put PS5 at 77% of pre-order sales versus 23% for Xbox Series X|S. In real terms, that's 3.38 million copies and $331 million in revenue on PS5, against just over 1 million copies and $98 million on Xbox.
A big part of why the dollar figure is running so far ahead of a typical pre-launch total traces back to Sensor Tower's own earlier finding: 89% of GTA VI pre-orders are for the $100 Ultimate Edition rather than the $80 Standard Edition, a split several times wider than the industry norm. With most buyers paying the higher price, the total revenue figure climbs a lot faster than unit sales alone would suggest.
This total was reached with a large share of Rockstar's marketing campaign, including its Netflix tie-in aimed at reaching people who wouldn't normally buy a game on day one, still to come. If pre-order pace holds anywhere close to steady between now and launch, today's $429 million reads less like a ceiling and more like a starting point.
