Former Rockstar technical director says the GTA 6 leaks barely matter

Obbe Vermeij, who spent years as a technical director at Rockstar North working on everything from Vice City through GTA V, has weighed in on this week's CyberLeek leaks - and his take is a lot calmer than the internet's reaction to them. His argument, in short: almost none of the people who'll actually buy GTA VI are the ones watching leaked clips right now.

Most players never go looking for leaks

Vermeij's central point is about who actually seeks out leaked footage versus who eventually buys the game. In his estimate, the overwhelming majority of future GTA VI players simply don't spend time hunting down leaked clips online - they're avoiding spoilers, not chasing them. The people currently watching every CyberLeek upload are already the most locked-in segment of the audience, the ones who were buying the game regardless of what leaked.

He also points to how unusually quiet Rockstar has kept GTA VI's marketing compared to other big publishers. That mystery is deliberate, and it's part of why any leak - even a small one - detonates online: there's so little official footage to compare it against. His read is that if Rockstar had already put out several full gameplay trailers, this week's clips would barely register as news.

"Far less consequential" than Hot Coffee

Vermeij was at Rockstar during the Hot Coffee controversy - the hidden, unfinished sex-scene content discovered in GTA: San Andreas that triggered congressional hearings, an AO rating, and pulled copies from store shelves. He says that was genuinely rough on management at the time, but argues today's leaks don't come close by comparison. His long-term outlook stayed simple: he expects GTA VI to sell well for years, and considers the current leaks a tiny blip against that.

The CyberLeek angle undercuts its own credibility

Part of Vermeij's skepticism comes from what's riding alongside the leaks themselves. CyberLeek has tied its releases to promoting a cryptocurrency scheme, reportedly asking as much as $165,000 for ad space on future leak posts - closer to a monetized stunt than a straightforward whistleblower leak. Other alleged industry insiders have separately claimed some of the leaked clips are old, predating the current build, which would make them a weaker preview of the finished game than they first appeared.
