Grand Theft Auto VI launches Thursday 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. One detail from our own launch-date coverage is worth repeating here because it changes how everyone should prepare: physical copies arrive a week early, on 12 November, but the box contains a download code rather than a disc. There is no offline install path this time. Whether you pre-ordered a physical copy or bought digitally, you are downloading the entire game.
A pre-load is simply a publisher letting a platform download a game's files ahead of its actual unlock time, so players aren't stuck waiting on launch day itself. It's become standard for big releases, but Rockstar hasn't announced an exact pre-load window for GTA VI yet. Past Rockstar launches, and most major open-world titles generally, have opened pre-loads somewhere in the range of a few days to just over a week before unlock, so it's reasonable to expect something similar here, but treat any specific date you see quoted online as a guess until Rockstar confirms one.
Size is the same story. Rockstar hasn't published an install size for GTA VI. What we can say is that modern open-world games at this scale have trended large: Red Dead Redemption 2 sits north of 150GB with its high-resolution texture pack, and GTA V has grown well past 100GB over its many updates. A game built for this generation's consoles, with the amount of detail Rockstar's own screenshots have shown, landing somewhere in that same neighborhood would not be surprising. That's an expectation based on the pattern, not a confirmed figure, so don't plan your available storage around an exact number yet.
What's worth doing now regardless of the final size: check how much free space is actually on your console's drive, and if you're relying on external storage, confirm it's rated for the game types you play (PS5 and Xbox both have restrictions on running current-gen titles from certain external drives). If you're on PC, an SSD makes a real difference to load times in games this size, more than it used to matter a console generation ago.
On the download itself, a wired connection will almost always beat Wi-Fi for a file this large, both for speed and for avoiding a drop partway through. If your ISP has a data cap, it's worth checking where you stand for the month before a download this size lands, and downloading overnight or during off-peak hours can help if your connection slows down at busy times.
